Sleep Apnea Can Take Years Off Your Life

Sleep apnea is a nasty problem. Not only can it take years off your life by causing high blood pressure and potentially lethal heart attacks, it can also make the years you have left unpleasant. Have you ever had one of those days where you just didn't get good sleep and you felt like a zombie? Sleep apnea is a result of poor nighttime breathing habits which results in your sleep constantly being interrupted.

Now, you may not realize that your sleep is being interrupted unless your case is severe, but that interrupted sleep is what makes the next day such a foggy mess. So, tackling your sleep apnea is not just about living longer, it's about living better too.

Most sleep apnea appliances are what we call mandibular advancement appliances. This is a fancy way of saying that the appliance pushes your lower jaw forward so the back of the tongue does not block the air passage, and that the actual airway is not being compressed.

There are numerous versions of these appliances but we prefer the flexibility of the EMA appliance. The customizable elastic bands allows us to find the most effect and most comfortable setting for you. The EMA appliance is approved for mild to severe sleep apnea as well as snoring and bruxism.

Appliances vs. CPAP Machine

If you have ever had to try and sleep with a CPAP machine, you know how hard it is to fall asleep with that massive face mask attached to you. An appliance is a far less intrusive way to achieve similar results. For severe cases, a CPAP machine may be mandatory, but if you are not at that stage yet, you should definitely try an appliance.
